Coiled Canoe Basket

Coiled Canoe Basket

Part of the Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection. The condition of the basket and the feathers is outstanding, particularly in consideration of the apparent age of the piece. This example must date to the early years of the 20th century. Beautifully globose in shape, the sides are adorned with black geometric patterns that spiral up from the base. The designs are in bulrush and contrast nicely with the sedge grass root weft. Coiling is single rod, to the left, with a willow warp. Quail topknot feathers protrude whimsically from the sides. This piece is a Pomo classic.
