Coiled Basket

Coiled Basket

Large coiled Pomo Basket. A squat globose basket of 3 rod willow foundation. The weft is sedge grass root. Coiling direction is clockwise when viewed from above. The designs are dyed bulrush root. These designs are very elaborate with 7 pointed flower pattern in the center bottom. The sides are very ornate with zigzag and geometric patterns in groups which go around the basket and extend from bottom to top. There are alternating light and dark patterns on the rim which is called rim ticking. From Straw into Gold book by Foley Benson states that there are approximately 40,000 stitches of sedge grass root and dyed bulrush to create this spectacular basket, and that it features a pattern called "ant trails".
