Basket

Basket

Basket from Mission tribe. The shape is of flaring sides which rise from a flat bottom. It is a cooking basket and has apparently not been used. It is a coiled basket, the direction of the weave is clockwise from above. It has a bundle foundation of deer grass. The weft is sumac. The design is a wide band which is of three elements. The center amber element is dyed juncus rush. It has a border top and bottom of dark dyed juncus rush. The upper border is a simple line design of 2 rows of weaving with alternating segments of light and dark. The lower border has made of a zigzag design. The rim is finished in false braid. This is unusual. The rim material is conifer root. The rim coils also have a single strand of bear grass which is sewn on the exterior - very pleasing rim pattern. This is highly unusual in a mission basket.
