Lidded Basket

Lidded Basket

Lidded basket from Klamath River. (Yurok or Hupa) The weft is conifer root. The top and bottom are decorated with 1/2 twist overlay plain twining in triangular shapes which are reddish brown Woodwardia fern dyed with alder bark. These triangles have additional decorative elements in line patterns done in maiden hair fern stems. The weft shows in 2 strand twining on the rim and on part of the lid of the basket in 3 strand twining (knowb). All the designs are on a field of bear grass. There is an alternating light/dark band around the rim and base and at the very bottom start. The lid has a button handle which sticks up. The lid fits well and the design pattern goes well with the base. Klamath River
