Coiled Basket

Coiled Basket

Sierra Miwok coiled basket. Globose in shape. Coiling direction is clockwise when viewed from above. The weft is peeled willow or maple over a bundle foundation. The designs consist of two parallel patterns of zigzags which completely encompass the basket and these are done in bracken fern root. The rim finish is a false braid which is done in the same material as the weft. In the weave the stitches are interlocking and in many cases they are split on the interior surface. The foundation is 3-rod in which coil rows split the upper rod. This is a Sierra Miwok trait. Also the fagends are clipped on the exterior of the basket.
