Twined basket

Twined basket

Pomo twined basket in the shape of a small cooking container, the basket has a foundation of conifer root which appears to be mixed with sedge grass root in some places. The basket is identified by thin band designs which are four in #. 3 of the band designs are done in dyed bulrush root and the lower one is done in both redbud and dyed bulrush root. The weave is plain twining through out with the exception of one row of 3 strand twining at the rim and four rows of lattice twining at the base and of diagonal twining at the center bottom. Each of the band designs has a dau clearly visible with the exception of the lower most band design which has a big gap visible on the interior surface of the basket. The basket seems to have considerable age judging by the color of the weft material.
