Sifter Basket

Sifter Basket

Open lattice twined winnowing tray or sifter basket. The weft material is conifer root over a foundation of willow. There is a simple design consisting of two rows of redbud lattice twined in. There is a rim reinforcement with a heavy rod of dogwood. That rod has been wrapped with a plain coil of conifer root. The end of the rod protrudes beyond the wrapping and there is no evidence that the basket was not like that at the time the basket was completed. There is some staining in the interior, but otherwise the condition is good. The basket is very old and very likely had aboriginal use before the turn of the century.
