Winnowing tray

Winnowing tray

Open twined winnowing or sifter tray. The weave is open lattice twining. The weft is conifer root which has been twined over a willow foundation. There are 3 sets of simple band designs in redbud. The rim of the basket has been finished in dogwood reinforcement, very similar to the kind of reinforcement used in the Pomo hopper baskets. This dogwood rod reinforcement has been wrapped in conifer root with a plain coil finish. The condition is fair with some rim breakage from powder post beetle damage. The basket appears to have considerable age because of weft material and the degree of wear of the bottom. it is in a plastic bag because of suspected presence of powder post beetle.
