Coiled Basket

Coiled Basket

Small coiled basket. The basket is roughly coiled and misshapen. It has three-rod foundation with a weft of sedge grass root and triangular designs in dyed bulrush root. The basket appears to have been woven by a beginner because the coiling is uneven. On one of the triangular patterns on the bottom of the basket there are two stitches of red shafted flicker quills. Also in side of the basket above one of triangular patterns, there are two more stitches above one of the triangular patterns. These probably relate to "Kela" rules, which are part of Pomo menstrual taboo beliefs. The basket had a clockwise coiling direction when viewed from above.
