Hopper Basket

Hopper Basket

Pomo Hopper basket. Twined weave, plain twining for the most part with two bands of lattice twining. The weft material is conifer root over a willow warp. The designs are redbud in two band patterns. The upper band is rectangles; the lower bands zigzag. The upper band in redbud design has begun to mildew. The rim has been reinforced with a heavy dogwood reinforcement rod. The rim has been wrapped with briar root (?). The basket has a large hole in base. The basket is very old and there appears to be cornmeal that has been deposited through usage into the weave. It dates before the turn of the century. The basket may have been obtained through Elsie Allen: cf. SCHS tag
