Zulu Love Letters

Zulu Love Letters

Five Zulu Love Letters (also known as Incwadi Yothando). iNcwadi are a part of ritual courtship among the Zulu people. These “Love Letters” are typically panel necklaces or beaded squares attached to pins, as seen in this exhibit. They are made primarily by young women to give to potential suitors, often with the colors and symbols only understood by the maker and recipient, and are a key part of ritual courtship.
