Basket with friendship design
An aged basket, with a design of dark figures on a light background. There are areas where the basket has lost areas of the weave and then been repaired with a clear hard substance. There are darkened areas that are not a part of the design near the bottom, and on the exterior these patches are greenish and linger in the fragmented areas of the lighter material.
The design of standing figures appears to be Yokuts or Panamint but the coil direction does not match the Yokuts or Panamint practice, with this basket coiling left instead of right. It may be Southern Paiute, as it is common for the S. Paiute to borrow designs and have a history of exchange with the Panamint, and are often mistaken for Panamint baskets. The coiling direction is consistent with S. Paiute, who coil in either direction.
