Paiute Cradle Basket

Paiute Cradle Basket

04/03/2025: The woven cradle has a primarily oval shape. The cradle is formed of woody plants, such as willow or sumac rods (Great Basin | Milwaukee Public Museum, n.d.), twined horozontally with plant fiber and robust willow sticks (Whiteford, 2001) to the cradle back. The hide is sewn into the bottom of the frame. The hide wraps around the wooden frame, with the lower center laced up. Above the lace, the cradle features a twined woven hood. The hood is decorated with acrylic yarn embroidered in diagonal lines of blue, red, and blue again. The buckskin surrounding the frame features tassels at the base on either side of the lace. Plastic beads in red, white, turquoise, and blue colors make up the tassels. Most tassels contain shell beads at the bottom, while those without appear to be lacking in plastic beads. Above the tassels and directly beneath the woven hood is an upside-down trapezoid-like repeating design with little white beads around each upside-down trapezoid. The beads, which appear to be made of glass, create a line from the cradle's breadth edge to the opposing side. White fills the negative space with upside-down triangular forms and completes the line. The bottom of the inverted trapezoid is red, followed by a line of turquoise, two rows of orange, and two thick rows of blue. Finally, there is a dotted white line, with each dash consisting of three beads. The hood features an edge stitched into a wavy design. The buckskin contains little glass beads sewn into it, resulting in white dots on the exterior and red diamond shapes inside. The front edge of the woven hood contains tassels of little glass beads, each forming a light blue triangular shape and graduating into a circle of first dark blue, then white, and finally red. Above the woven hood, there is a big freeform zigzagging shape with a curved arch. A curved arch surrounds the area between the woven hood and the top of the cradle. The line has trapezoid shapes that create a pattern that begins with dashes of white and progresses into a line of dark blue. The trapezoid shape starts with turquoise, moves inward to reveal a row of dark blue, and concludes with two rows of orange in the center. White fills in the negative space in upside-down triangular forms and covers the end of the arching line. There are more buckskin tassels on the back of the cradle. Above the tassels at the back of the cradle, a dotted multicolor line of small glass beads is visible. The design organizes the colors into two rows of three, using dark blue, turquoise, white, orange, and red. RMR

  • Cultural Group: Paiute
  • Cultural Context: 04/04/2025: The woven hood was frequently ornamented with line motifs based on the child's gender. Boys received diagonal lines, while girls received diamonds. If the family intended to use the cradle for multiple children or if the gender was unknown, they employed neutral patterns (Great Basin | Milwaukee Public Museum, n.d.). RMR
