  • Cultural Context: The Ashanti Empire, founded by the still existing Akan peoples, was well known for their metalwork. This empire had contact with Islamic artists and traders, and adopted a variety of metalworking techniques through contact and conquest of other groups, using hammering and lost wax techniques to make gold and brass pieces. The Ashanti people today still wear and use ceremonial jewelry. Powder glass beads are a popular craft in Ghana, primarily made by Ashanti and Krobo craftspeople, and constructed from finely ground glass from broken glass items such as bottles.
