Hand Tooled Carved Canoe Prow
New Guinea Tribal Asmat Field Collected Hand Tooled Carved Canoe Prow
This piece comes from the Asmat headhunters tribe in Papua New Guinea in the Brazza River Region. The Asmat were made famous when Michael Rockefeller, son of Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared on the coast of Papua New Guinea in the 1960’s. The piece was collected in the region by my grandfather (seller on ebay), who lived briefly with the Asmat people in 1996. The canoe prow is in excellent condition and is a beautiful example of open carving work. It is 25" across and 8" tall.
