Runic Stone

Runic Stone

Runic Stone: Jelling- hand painted (resin reproduction) This beautiful runestone is modeled after the Jelling stone Harald Bluetooth had made in honor of his parents.  Runic inscription reads: "King Harald ordered this monument made in memory of Gorm, his father, and in memory of Thyra, his mother; that Harald who won for himself all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian."  Erected around 965AD by King Harald Bluetooth in Jelling, Denmark. Often called "Denmark's birth certificate" due to the stone naming Denmark, as well as clear proof in the change of religion from Paganism to Christianity. Inscription translated on seperate document attached. This stone was originally brightly colored, which is depicted by this replica. On one side, Christ can be seen with arms outstretched, and on another an animal with a snake coiled around it. This is the oldest example of Christ in Scandinavia. There is a document saved in computer "Jelling Stone translation" which may add to a display featuring this item.
