  • Cultural Context: Reproductions of the Lewis chessmen, or Uig chessmen after the bay they were found, are 12th-century chess pieces discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland . Originals are carved out of walrus ivory. It is thought the pieces were originally made in Norway, specifically the Trondheim area as similarly designed pieces have been found there. Despite many of the pieces appearing to have comical or sad expressions, it is considered that instead, they are images of strength, ferocity, or contemplation and wisdom. Originals are on display at The British Museum and The National Museum of Scotland.
