Book shaped antique game box
"Evening at Home" Volumes 1&2 Checkers
"Evenings @ Home Vol. 1 & 2" Mid to late-1800s folding family board game designed to look like volumed books on a shelf. Popular in the US, and UK Victorian Era. The title on this particular game is that of a volumed collection of stories written by John Aikin between 1792-1796, also refered to as "The Juvenile Budget Opened." This collection is known as an early example of children's literature and was in the homes of many families. Some types of folding board games often utilized chromolithographic paper such as this one (a process populatized in 1937), while others were leather on wood, or even painted.
28 wooden games pieces (14 light, 14 dark) and Leather dice cup (missing dice). Base is constructed of wood. Outer paper peeling and very worn. Two sides are no longer attached at opening--should open at the spine. Inside is in better condition. Spine reads "Evenings at Home Vol. 1 & 2."
