mask

mask

Bhutan. Dragon head, medallion on top of head, white with green. Pink nose, mouth and ears. Open mouth with fangs and tongue sticking out. Yellow and green eyes. Bhutanese masks are used in monasteries or during religious festivals, as part of costumes worn in dances. Each mask has its own meaning, as does each dance. Each mask is painstakingly produced by hand, beginning with drying out pine for months, then gradually shaped and contoured before it can be finished and painted.
