A barong is a lion-like creature known as the “King of the Forest.” It is considered to be a good spirit and a protector. Barong are said to be able to take many animal shapes although lion is the most common. A mask like this would be used traditionally in dances symbolizing the battle between the good spirits and the bad spirits, with the good remaining victorious. Traditionally, each village has a barong mask in their temple as a guardian of the village. It is taken out occasionally to be worn for dances and processions. Such masks often take two people to carry it as they may weigh as much as 100 lbs.
