  • Cultural Context: Juan Quezada was the founder of the Mata Ortiz pottery tradition in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. At a young age, Quezada found ancient sherds of Mogollon pottery in in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquimé) and learned how to recreate it on his own. He was "discovered" by Spencer McCallum, an anthropologist from California, who pushed Quezada to refine and market his craft. Today, over 200 villagers make pottery based upon this technique, and it has become highly sought after, lifting the village out of poverty. The pottery is not made on a wheel - it is entirely hand formed.
