Coiled Basketry Goblet
Part of the Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection
An unusual combination of two weaves compliments the non-traditional footed shape of the piece. The body of the basket is lattice twined with underselvage of plain twining, a common occurrence. However, a coiled basketry foot has been sewn on to the base, a most unusual feature. A heavy rim rod group is coiled in redbud. The triangular designs are also in redbud. The weft is sedge grass root and the foundation warp is willow. Such a goblet shape was a common tourist sale item in the early part of this century.
