Pestle *Elsie Allen Collection*
Part of the Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection
A lovely greenish black in tone with white highlights, this piece has a flared pounding end and a pointed top. Such stones were used to pound acorns and this particular stone was used by Annie Burke, a fact recorded by Genevieve Aguilar. This is one of the best documented and best preserved pestles anywhere.
This pestle is pictured in Elsie Allen's Book: Pomo Basketmaking, a supreme art for the weaver, page 66, in Annie Burke's hand.
