Hopper Basket

Hopper Basket

Part of the Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection This mortar hopper is more than one hundred years old. Designed to aid the pounding of acorns, the primary weave of plain twining is reinforced with lattice twining. Three bands of simple check designs adorn the upper wall. The rim is a wrapped rod. Sedge grass forms the weft and is twined over a foundation of willow. This basket was used aboriginally and has a food residue on the interior surface.
