Twined Burden Basket

Twined Burden Basket

Part of the Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection. According to ethnographic data, this basket dates from before 1884, and was made in Hopland. It is a Pomo classic, with the flaring cone shape and the bold spiral designs in a lattice bound weave of twined redbud. Sedge grass root forms the diagonally twined weft that has a willow warp foundation. The rim wrap binds a heavy rod that is used to reinforce the opening. A clear "Dau" pattern adorns one of the arrowhead shapes in the design. Truly a magnificent basket, large burdens of this quality are extremely rare.
