Twined Burden Basket

Twined Burden Basket

Part of the Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection This immense piece was made in the traditional shape for burden baskets of the flaring cone. Diagonal twining was employed with sedge grass root over a warp of willow. Plain twining was also utilized. A heavy wood rod reinforces the rim that is wrapped in redbud. Redbud also forms the ten design bands that are executed in a lattice bound twining. Large burden baskets in good condition are quite rare today.
