Vase
Vase - Hopi Sikyatki Revival (or Hanu Polychrome). Coiled; oxidized; pit-fired. Almost cylindrical in shape with slightly coutcurved walls; direct rim with rounded lip. Black and red slip painted designs on cream. Stylized bird designs on body; black encircling band just below rim; black band on lip. The pit firing has left orange flashings on the cream slip.

- Cultural Context: In the late 19th century, Nampeyo, a Hopi-Tewa woman from Hano, Hopi 1st Mesa, revived the ancient Hopi polychrome ware from Sikyatki. She copied vessel shapes, colors, and designs. Contemporary Hopi polychrome reflects this heritage.
