Inside and old building, possibly a fire station. The room is large, with built in cabinets visible on the left and an offset alcove with raised floor and arched roof. A door opens into the room and on the floor sits a large pitcher. At the top of the alcove is a window with 15 panes, one of which is boarded over. Adjacent to the alcove, but on the larger section of floor, is a pot belly wood stove. The stovepipe passes through a barrel-like chamber approximately two feet above the stove, before continuing upwards toward the ceiling. The whole unit sits on a cement slab and is barricaded by an iron rod frame. Painted across the top of the alcove arch are the words: "FAITHFUL & FEARLESS". Hanging just below the arch is a sign, diamond-shaped and ornate, which reads: "LIBERTY E. Co." More ornate woodwork is visible in an upper corner of the room. Wainscotting panels the lower fourth of the walls and the rest is covered with horizontal boards.

  • Cultural Context: Jesse Peter was a woodshop teacher at Santa Rosa Middle School and a good friend of Floyd P. Bailey who was president of the Jr. College at that time. Peter would conduct fieldexpeditions in order to gather specimens of various sorts for display at the SRJC Natural History Museum (which subsequently evolved into the Native American Art Museum). He solicited the assistance of college students to help collect the specimens and these photos are from one of those expeditions.
