Fire wagon with fire hose and bells. Wagon wheels and frame support a central spool containing a coiled fire hose for easy deployment. On an ornate wrought iron frame hang two bells with clappers. The frame, or part of it, appears as if it rocks back and forth to cause the bells to ring. A large rope is wound to two smaller spools on the front of the wagon and the ends of the rope extend along a handle where the wagon would be lashed to a team of horses that would pull the fire wagon out on a call.

  • Cultural Context: Jesse Peter was a woodshop teacher at Santa Rosa Middle School and a good friend of Floyd P. Bailey who was president of the Jr. College at that time. Peter would conduct fieldexpeditions in order to gather specimens of various sorts for display at the SRJC Natural History Museum (which subsequently evolved into the Native American Art Museum). He solicited the assistance of college students to help collect the specimens and these photos are from one of those expeditions.
