Rattle
Tsimshian - two faced, shaman's rattle; maple; spherical ovoid form with globular surface. Made in two registers (shells) glued together around sides. Natural wood color; painted facial features- open thin lidded eyes on bulging orbs. Eyes are set with abolone shell: eyebrows are dominant - painted black; Rounded protruding nostrils, tongue & lips painted vermillion. One face appears feminine (small round lips with tongue sticking out). Other face appears masculine - large oval lips with tongue (sticking out). Handle - round, natural colored wood also made in two registers- held together with two round wooden pegs. Signature carved in bottom of handle in capital letters.
