Basket with handle. Bundle coiled. Warp - pine needles; weft - reed strips. No field elements, no designs. Weft is evenly spaced 1/4" apart, leaving warp visible. Horizontal handle on shoulder is 6 inches across and is1 1/2 inches from the base. Handle is wrapped with weft, fully covering warp. Rim diameter is 1 1/2" inches from the base, leaving walls of this basket to lean inward.

  • Cultural Context: Basket was possibly made for trade since the Seminole had early contact with traders. The Seminoles are actually Creek Indians who mixed with escaped African slaves. It is written in the Mendocino Co. Museum donation papers that this basket was possibly a Southeast African basket, but this is an incorrect identification. This basket shows African influence in the technology.
