Hat

Hat

Woman's hat - Plain twined, full twist overlay. Warp - tule; weft - tule. Design element - dyed tule; four main design elements spaced evenly around the basket. Each design element consists of four parallelograms stacked on top of each other at an angle with an upside down triangle at the top. The center of each parallelogram has a checker board effect. Just below the rim, there are two dark bands, three stitches wide around the circumference. The rim finish is tule cordage twisted. Just above the major design elements there are two dark bands two stitches wide around the circumference and just above this, there are two rows of lattice twining made of tule cordage. The basketry start is 1 3/4 inches wide and appears to be spruce root. Between the start and lattice twining, there is a 3/4 inch band alternating dark, light, dark, light. Interior is very crudely finished with many weft bands unfinished. Distinguishing marks: several strands of the weaver's hair, small drips of rust colored paint, and there is a dau- dark weft strand sewn across two rows from design near the top of one of the major design elements.
