Turtle Effigy Pot

Turtle Effigy Pot

Turtle effigy pot. Labeled "Santa Clara Turtle 1920 75.00" Note: F. Benson noted on receipt agreement possible Papago. Pot is made from red clay, burnished with black painted design lines for shell and an outline emphasizing the leg and facial features. These lines seem like a black marking pen was used to make them. It is easily smudged and looks as if when applied the moisture was sucked down into the fired piece. See also group photo 91.179. Left front leg was broken and repaired with a yellow/white material. There is a very faint pencil lettering between the left front and hind leg on the bottom of the piece.. could say...By Yisiri Lacain?
