Water Jar

Water Jar

Navajo Water Jar. This jar was coiled into a olla shape. It has been covered with pinon pitch. the handles were braided 1/4" fiber material and then drawn through the coils. The rim is finished in a false braid. Pitch is crystallized and falling off. The handles are coming out of the jar and beginning to unbraid. The handles are spaced about 3" apart on one side of the jar. At the rim where most of the pitch is gone the basket material appears to have been coated in red clay before applying pitch.
