Ceramic- bichrome, Mayoid dwarf; lightly burnished, red clay with cream slip. Ceramic figurine has been mounted on board covered in green velvet and framed. Possible reproduction. May represent th e"fat god" of Veracruz Classic.

  • Cultural Context: The "fat god" is associated with pulque, an alcoholic drink made by fermenting the juice of the maguey cactus (Agave sp.) He is always shown fat and often happy. This figurine style from Veracruz is called "mayoid" because it exhibits infuluence from the Maya culture to the south and east. It is moldmade and is very similar to the Maya figurines from the isle of Jaina, off the coast of Campiche.
