Kachina Doll

Crow Mother Kachina doll. Carved of cottonwood root. Crow Mother has a green and black face with a feather head dress and women's clothing. She is carrying a basket that appears to be a Navajo wedding basket. There is green frayed yarn around the lower part of the mask. She has a shawl around her shoulders that cascades down and around her. The feathers have reached a deteriorated state, otherwise in very good condition.

  • Cultural Context: Crow Mother Kachina Is known as Angwusnasomtaka . She is present during the Bean Dance ceremony in February, at which time she leads the initiation of Hopi children into the knowledge of the Kachinas. In her hands she often carries yucca switches, with which the children are whipped during the ceremony. Afterwards she may lead the other kachinas into a peublo carrying a basket of corn kernels and bean sprouts. This particular doll may represent Crow Mother during that time.
