Etched Whale Baleen

Etched Whale Baleen

This is a piece of Baleen from a whale. It is black and has two scenes etched into the surface at the wide end. One scene is of two Eskimos and sled pulled by four dogs. The other is four men in a boat getting ready to harpoon a sea mammal. There are mountains in the background. Also printed on the Baleen is "Top of the World" Barrow, Alaska. The baleen is a filtering apparatus of the whale's tongue. This piece has fringe made from fraying the baleen. Photo for 88.37 and 88.38.
