This basket is lidded globose piece made with black baleen. Baleen is part of the tongue of a whale. There are white stitches placed evenly around the sides. The tight fitting lid has an ivory handle carved to form a Polar Bear effigy. The bottom of the basket has an insert piece of round ivory 2 1/4" wide with holes made on the inside edge to facilitate connecting the ivory to the basket.
