Shipibo Backstrap Loom. The backstrap is made of rawhide with holes on each end where a bark strap is attached. The backstrap would be attached to one of the end rods of the loom with the bark strap. The loom has two end rods made of the trunk wood of a bactris tree. The rod measuring 34 1/2" has 58" of finished cloth wrapped around it. The warp threads are cottom and primarily creme colored but lines of green, red, and black are seen at each end and down the center. The weft is creme colored cotton thread. The end rod measuring 31 1/2" has many feet of warp threads wrapped around it. Where the fabrics piece ends and free warp threads meet there is a palm rod holding the fabric taut. There is a heddle in place 37 1/2" long " " batten " " 40 1/2" long " " shed " " 41 1/2" long " " rod holding the weft threads 32 1/2" long NOTE: There is evidence of insect infestation on the shed.
