Pende wood muyombo mask used in the initiation ceremonies of young boys into adulthood. Raffia around bead and raffia pile cloth on the back of the head. It is painted red with white detail emphasized. 7/29/2026: of classic form and polychromed black, white and red, the stylized features including scarification to cheeks and forehead, a pug nose, single brow, downturned mouth, from which depends an unusually long "beard" decorated with triangle and lozenge patterns and fringed with raffia, the whole demonstrating considerable signs of age and use.
