Canoe Basket
Part of the Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection.
One of the rare known examples of weaving of this renowned Pomo spiritual leader, this piece is one of the finest examples of Pomo basketry in existence. Exquisite in design, form, and execution, this great basket has a very pleasing oval shape. The walls curve vertically from the flat base. One-rod coiling was employed using sedge grass root for the weft. The arrowhead shapes in the design are woven in redbud and zigzag around the walls. The rim coiling is wrapped in alternating light and dark stitches. A truly stunning basket, this piece demonstrates well the artistic genius of Salome Alcantra.
