Coiled Canoe Basket
Part of the Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection.
The artist is the niece of the renowned Laura Somersal, Dry Creek Pomo/Wappo. This example is wondrously dramatic with black zigzags that rise vertically to a black rim band. Symmetry is near perfect in design and form. Three-rod coiling was employed by the artist with a weft of sedge grass root. The contrasting designs are in black dyed bulrush and the foundation is willow. This basket represents the great artistry of a well known weaver.
