Twined Burden Basket
Part of the Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection.
According to ethnographic data, this basket dates from before 1884, and was made in Hopland. It is a Pomo classic, with the flaring cone shape and the bold spiral designs in a lattice bound weave of twined redbud. Sedge grass root forms the diagonally twined weft that has a willow warp foundation. The rim wrap binds a heavy rod that is used to reinforce the opening. A clear "Dau" pattern adorns one of the arrowhead shapes in the design. Truly a magnificent basket, large burdens of this quality are extremely rare.
