The Sacred and The Profane: The Mask as Performance and Art

Eli Renteria is a Chicano artist from Tucson, Arizona, who has been performing since their early childhood, and has been making masks for the past seven years. They studied Mask, Melodrama, and Clown at Dell’Arte International School for Physical Theatre and has apprenticed under master mask maker Zarco Guerrero in Mesa, Arizona. Renteria draws much of their inspiration from their own mixed heritage as well as the cultural influences and natural beauty of the Southwest.They also incorporate many ideas and elements from different peoples encountered in his travels. Renteria is a Santa Rosa Junior College graduate and currently attends UCLA as an anthropology major. They continue to make masks and performs at various cultural festivals throughout the Southwest.
