Celebrating the Huipil

Exhibit Dates: Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024 through Thursday, October 10th, 2024

In observance of Latinx Heritage Month, this exhibit features selections from the Multicultural Museum's collection of huipils: the colorful, traditional garments worn by indigenous women from Mexico to Central America. Huipils are hand-woven and often have detailed embroidery on them.

Conchis Randazzo was born in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico, which is considered the cultural heart of Mexico. She is very proud of her roots and traditions and wants to share that with the SRJC community. She has been a student at SRJC and recently transferred to SSU to obtain her BA in Sociology. She wanted to be a part of a Hispanic community that included color, music and dance. She founded the ballet Folklorico club “Espejo de mi alma” in which SRJC students can come to learn a little bit of the history and typical dances from all over Mexico.   Leticia Contreras will be leading dances during the event.

The Celebrating the Huipil exhibit features selections from the Multicultural Museum's collection of huipils: the colorful, traditional garments worn by indigenous women from Mexico to Central America. Huipils are hand-woven and often have detailed embroidery on them. These garments hold deep cultural significance, serving not just as clothing but as a canvas for storytelling. The colors, patterns, and designs woven into each huipil can convey a wealth of information, such as the wearer's country, region, or even specific village, as well as the language they speak.

Much gratitude to Malena Hernandez Legorreta for providing Spanish translations for all signage in this exhibit!
